Ladder Guidelines

How Ladder Play Works

Review the sign-up requirements, weekly scheduling process, playing format, and placement guidelines before participating.

Signing Up

Sign up for Ladder on the Sign-up Sheet by Thursday of the week before you play. Make sure to provide a phone number.

Once you are signed up, you will remain on the Ladder until you sign off, become a No Show, or Ladder has ended for the season.

The Schedule

The Ladder Schedule for the following week is usually posted at the courts and on the Venture Out Pickleball website by Friday of each week.

Initial the schedule beside your name to indicate to the other group members that you are aware of your play time.

Unable to Play

If you cannot play as scheduled, you need to get a substitute. Write the substitute’s name and the word “Sub” beside your name.

If you do not get a substitute, or your substitute does not appear, you will be considered a No Show and removed from the Ladder.

If you know you will be unavailable, sign the Sign-off Sheet the week before. Add your name to the Sign-up Sheet when you are ready to play again.

Playing the Ladder

You play one game with each of the three members in your group for a total of three games.

  • Games are played to 11.
  • Win by 1 point.
  • Switch ends at 6 points.
  • Write the final scores on the Ladder Schedule after all games are complete.
  • The score for any substitute will be 0.

No Shows

A player who does not appear is considered a No Show. The player automatically loses the group and will be dropped from the Ladder.

The remaining players should find a fourth person at a similar skill level, or they may choose not to play.

Write “No Show” beside the player’s name on the Ladder Schedule. The player must use the Sign-up Sheet to return.

Rain and Adverse Weather

If a group cannot play because of rain or adverse weather, write “Rain” on the Ladder Schedule. Player positions will not be affected by a rainout.

How Players Are Placed on the Ladder

The Ladder Committee seeds players based on previous Ladder results or their Venture Out skill level. Players move up and down based on each week’s results.

In general, the player who wins a group moves to the next higher group, and the player who loses moves to the next lower group.

Please note: Actual placements may be affected by new players joining from the Sign-up Sheet and players being removed.

Specific Level Group Play Peg-system play on Courts 8 through 11
SLGP

Specific Level Group Play

Scheduled play is held from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Courts 9, 10, and 11. Court 8 is used as a flex court when needed.

Rules of Play

  • The peg system is used to organize play.
  • There are no fixed groups.
  • Place your peg in order and join the next available game of four.
  • Maintain the spirit of mixed-level play and rotate partners fairly.
  • If more than two groups of four are waiting, games are played to 9 points.

Use of Court 8

Court 8 opens for SLGP when four or more groups of four are waiting.

When the wait drops below three groups of four, Court 8 returns to Open Play.

Court usage should be monitored and adjusted throughout the session.

Saturday Scrambles Random-partner Saturday competition
Saturday Program

Saturday Scrambles

Saturday morning Scrambles are popular and have a limited number of players in each group.

Participation

Players must be Pickleball Club members. Sign-up for all groups is handled through SignUpGenius.

If you sign up, you must attend and arrive at least 10 minutes before your starting time.

Partners are selected randomly using drawn chips.

Levels and Times

Scrambles are divided into eight groups: 2.5, 3.0, 3.25, 3.5, 3.65, 3.75, 4.0, and 4.25.

Starting times are staggered, so check the board for your assigned time. Play generally ends before 12:30 p.m. but may run longer.

Open Play Prime-time and non-prime-time guidelines
Open Play Guidelines

Open Play

Prime-time rules apply Monday through Friday from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. These rules prevent crowding and provide fair access to the courts.

Prime-Time Rules

  • Place one to four pins per slot.
  • Place your clothespin on the peg board beginning with the first available slot.
  • Another group of one to four players may use the next available slot.
  • Additional groups must wait until the first group has four pins before going to the courts.
  • Do not pressure other players to join an unfilled group.
  • Be patient and consider joining the first group when space is available.

If you want to play with a set group, explain that to those waiting to help prevent confusion.

Non-Prime-Time Rules

When courts are not being used for Round Robins, Scrambles, tournaments, or other club events, you may use any open court to play with friends, family, or other players.

  • Clothespins are not required while at least one court remains available for incoming players.
  • If all courts fill, return to the pegging system.
  • You may play multiple games with your group while at least one court remains open for others.
Lessons Member instruction by skill level
Member Instruction

Pickleball Lessons

Instruction is available to Pickleball Club members only. Members receive invitations for their skill group through SignUpGenius.

Registration

Lesson space is limited. If you cannot attend, remove your name from SignUpGenius so the next alternate can participate.

Instruction

Instructors use drills and game-play situations to help members improve their skills and understand team strategy.

Instruction is progressive. After completing lessons at your current level, you are encouraged to play and practice what you have learned.

4 Pack Evening team competition under the lights
Light Up the Night

4 Pack Pickleball

Four Pack is a weekly team event offered at two levels of play. New teams are formed each week for organized evening games with other club members.

Invitations are sent through SignUpGenius. Arrive 15 minutes early for team placement and instructions.

How the Game Is Played

  • Games use rally scoring. The first team to 25 wins.
  • Teams switch sides at 13 points.
  • The first team listed selects side, serve, receive, or defer.
  • Each player remains on a dedicated odd or even side.
  • Players do not switch positions to serve.
  • Every serve results in a point.
  • Each team serves from the side corresponding to its score.
  • Mixed partners switch after every game.
  • Only players on the court make line calls.
  • Call the score loudly before serving.

Playing Rotation

The coordinator determines whether female or male players begin each week.

One group plays until the cumulative score reaches 5, followed by the next group until 10. The first mixed doubles group plays until 15, and the second mixed group plays until 20. The order repeats until a team reaches 25.

Each team receives one one-minute timeout per match. Players currently on the court may switch sides during that timeout.

Matches and Winners

  • Teams play against every other team.
  • A five-minute break is provided after half of the games.
  • Report each match score to the bulletin board.
  • The team with the most wins is the winner.

Ties are decided by head-to-head results. If more than two teams are tied, points scored are used, followed by points allowed if the tie remains.

Schedule and Sign-up

Levels 2.5 through 3.65 play Monday nights from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Levels 3.75 through 4.25 play Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Sign up as an individual. Teams are randomly selected on the day of play and consist of two men and two women. A maximum of 10 teams is allowed each week per level.

Sign up under the correct SignUpGenius tab. If you play one week, wait until the day before the next event to sign up again so other members have an opportunity to play.

Live Ball Fast-paced rotating drill and game format
Fast-Paced Play

Pickleball Live Ball

Live Ball is a high-energy, continuous pickleball drill and game format. It is often described as a King or Queen of the Court format because players rotate in and out while rallies continue with minimal breaks.

Skills and Playing Style

Live Ball provides an intense workout while helping players improve third-shot drops, dinking, volleys, court movement, and fast decision-making.

The program is social, active, and fast paced.

Participation

Up to 12 players participate on one court.

Watch for a Live Ball invitation through SignUpGenius.

PLAYER PLACEMENT PROGRAM - 2025-2026

Player Movement

All players are encouraged to play at a level that is appropriate for their individual skill level.

Players may have improved in the summer months and/or developed throughout the year and therefore, may now want to work their way up to the next level. Also, players may have lost a step in their game, thus a move to a lower skill level could be beneficial to not only themselves but their peer group.

Players may also choose to move to the Social group – which is a non-competitive group. If you find you don’t wish to participate in competitive events or structured instruction, the Social group members will play in Open Play and be included in all communications pertaining to scheduled social events and club notifications. If you wish to be placed in the Social group, please send an email to voplayerplacement@gmail.com .

Moving Down

  1. A player may elect to move themselves to a lower level by requesting the move in writing to voplayerplacement@gmail.com with a brief explanation of their request.

If you plan to move down due to an injury you expect to recover from, know that you must earn points to move back up. You may want to consider staying at your current level until you’re recovered.

  2. If a player is struggling at their current level, players at that level may recommend in writing (to voplayerplacement@gmail.com) that the PPC review said player’s placement. A minimum of 6 members in that player’s level are required for the PPC to review this player.
  3. A) if the data shows this player is in fact not struggling and is “holding their own” within the group the player shall remain at their current level

    B) If the data supports the peer recommendations or if there is no data on the player, the PPC will meet with this player to discuss the player(s) views and options for that player will be explored. The PPC will make a decision after consulting with the player to either move the player down or defer the decision for 30 days to allow the player the opportunity to play in various competitive programs where results are recorded.

Moving Up

If a player receives 25 or more points (20 for the 3.0 level), using The Objective Results Based System (ORBS), they will be automatically moved to the higher level. If you think you have accumulated these points, send an email to voplayerplacement@gmail.com and your points will be confirmed and if you do have enough points, you will be advanced.

Please note that points you earn one season will carry over to the next season (including the ‘best results’ earned at the last two in-house tournaments held).

New Player PlacementPlacement options for new and returning members

Welcome New Members to the Venture Out Pickleball Club.

We have 3 options to assist you in finding the most appropriate program.

  1. Join the Social group which is a non-competitive group where you will play other members anytime during open play. You will receive correspondence relative to all club related activities.
  2. Join the clubs beginner skill level group and be placed in the 2.0 group which is a beginner program and offers organized court time. This program is ideal for those players new to the game who want to practice with other beginner players. Once you can play with some success, know the rules, and can keep score, you may move yourself to the 2.5 group, which provides both social and competitive round robin play, as well as the Saturday scrambles (similar to a tournament).
  3. If you are a more experienced player, please advise the registrar of your experience and interest in being placed in one of the clubs other 7 skill level groups. You may provide any type of sanctioned rating you have with such programs as UTPR (or UTR-P), PB, DUPR or any other information you think would assist our Player Placement Committee (PPC) in placing you in the most appropriate group. Placement will happen the Sunday after you register - at 4:00 on court 2 (unless you are notified otherwise) - at which time you will meet with a member of the PPC. After a review of any data, as well as a demonstration of your on court play, you will be placed in a skill level group. Once you have been placed, you will receive invitations to all skill level events with that group. Also be advised that further movement between the various skill levels could happen until the most appropriate group is found for you.

If you are a returning member that has been gone from Venture Out for 2 or more consecutive seasons, then you may also come on Sunday at 4:00 and be placed in a group.

There are five opportunities for a player to earn points.

  1. Saturday Scramble
  2. Sunday Competitive Round Robin (CRR)
  3. Ladder
  4. VO In House Tournament - Gender
  5. VO In House Tournament - Mixed

Points will be awarded based on the members results in the competitive programs outlined Below.

  • Scramble, Sunday Competitive Round Robin (CRR) and Ladder: the highest points earned at 4 of the last 6 times played per program
  • In-house Tournament (see below for further details)

NOTES:

Ladder Play – Players will earn points in ladder play if they finish first or second and have played in a rung with at least 2 players from a higher skill level.

If you are in a rung that has a SUB, please ensure the sub’s name is written in legibly and all scores are provided. If all the information is present, (all 4 players names and scores for all four names), then points may still be awarded if the criteria of 2 players in a higher level is met and you come in 1st or 2nd.

If players are tied in a program the total points of the 2 finishing places will be combined and each player will receive half of the total points. (i.e. if 2 players tie for first in Competitive Round Robin then both players receive 3 points).

If a player plays twice in Sunday Competitive Play, results from the first time they played will be used (i.e., played at 8 am and again at 2:00 - the results from 8 am will be the only results used for that day).

Scramble Play: No points are awarded if 2 level’s are combined. (for example: in order to have enough players, 2 level’s are combined so there are enough to play)

In-house tournaments: The ‘best results’ a player had from either of the last 2 tournaments held, will be used for points.

Explanation: Should a player have a Gold and a Silver for a total of 8 points in the December tournament and a Bronze and a Gold in the March tournament for a total of 7 points, the results from the December tournament will be used.

For points to be awarded, the event now must have had a minimum of 6 teams competing.

EXAMPLE:

Calculation of points:

To determine points, the highest points earned at 4 of the last 6 times played per program, will be applied towards the 25-point limit (20 points for level 3.0).

For instance, in the case of the Saturday Scramble, the points earned from the best four of the last six appearances (including those dating back to the 2024/2025 season) will be counted. Therefore, when participants participate in six events, only the points from the top four will be counted.

Example:

The following points were awarded the last 6 times this player played.

  • December 20th: Gold (4 points)
  • December 13th: Silver (2 points)
  • November 29th: No medal
  • November 15th: Gold (4 points)
  • April 12th: Bronze (1 point)
  • April 5th: Silver (2 points)

The points from 4 of the events will be used.

  • December 20th: Gold (4 points)
  • December 13th: Silver (2 points)
  • November 29th: No medal
  • November 15th: Gold (4 points)
  • April 12th: Bronze (1 point)
  • April 5th: Silver (2 points)

So this player will receive 12 points for Saturday Scramble

This process will be repeated for Sunday Competitive Play and the ladder.

In-House Tournament:

The points earned for the in-house tournament will be the ‘best results’ a player had from either of the last 2 tournaments held.

Points Needed:

When all the points are tabulated, if the player is at 25 points or more (20 points or more for level 3.0), they will advance to the next level.

Question & AnswersCommon Player Placement questions
Q. Who do I email to find out my points?

A. Email voplayerplacement@gmail.com to find out how many points you have.

Q. Do I need to have a rating to play Pickleball at Venture Out?

A. Definitely not! The Club has ensured that there are always some courts available for open or social play.

Q. What play can I be involved in without playing in a skill level group

A. Open or Social play is always available, for everyone to enjoy. You can also sign-up to play ladder.

Q. I am new to Pickleball and went into level 2.0. What is the difference between 2.0 and 2.5 and how do I move to 3.0?

A. The beginner level of 2.0 is for players that are still learning how to score, serve and the very basics. There is a lesson available at this level and a social round robin. Once you can keep score, serve and keep a rally going - you can move yourself to level 2.5 where you will have a few more choices for competitive play - scramble, round robins, Sunday play, lessons. Just send an email to voplayerplacement@gmail.com to move.

The 2.5 Player Placement Ambassador will discuss with you once they feel you are ready to move up to 3.0.

Q. What are the advantages of being placed in a skill level group?

A. You will receive invites to different playing events, including social Round Robins, Sunday Competitive  Round Robins, Saturday Scrambles & lessons. Sign-up Genius is used for invitations for these programs.

Q. Why can’t I just play in the group that I believe is my skill level?

A. When playing with people of the same skill level, the games are more competitive, resulting in longer and closer rallies thus leading to a better playing experience for all. If you are at a lower skill level, and play with better players in an organized skill level event it can bring down the level of play, adversely affecting everyone's experience. If your skill level is higher than those you are playing with, this could cause a safety issue (eg. when players are hitting harder or moving much quicker than those around them).

Q. How do I get placed in a group?

A. At the start of the season, returning players will be placed in the same group as last year. New players to the park will be placed by the PPC in a group with other players of a similar skill level. Players will be moved between the various groups if they are either excelling or struggling with meeting the general skill set of their group as noticed during round robins, scrambles, etc.

Q. Do I have to participate in round robins and scrambles if I am a member of a skill level group?

A. Although you do not need to participate in those events, you may prefer placement in the Social Non-Competitive Group.  Other than lessons, there would be no reason to be involved in a skill level group.

Q. Will someone contact me if I reach 25 (or 20 points if I am a 3.0) points?

A.  No. There is not an ongoing count for players. Points are calculated for you only when you ask for your points.

Q. Do my points carry over to next season?

A.  When points are calculated, the last 6 times you played in that event (examples:. scramble, Sunday Competitive Play) are looked at. If that means events from last season must be looked at they will be. When we return in November, if you asked for points, many of the 6 times may be from the previous season (however, points won’t go back over 2 seasons, so if some of the points that you have at the end of a season are from the prior season, they will drop off going into the new season.

Example: If at the end of March of 2026 you have 18 points and 4 were earned during last season - the 24/25 season, and 14 were earned during this season - the 25/26 season, when you return in November of 2026, the 4 points earned during the 24/25 season will drop off. Points will only be used from 2 seasons.

Q. Who are the members of the PPC?

A. The PPC’s members are Ray Savino (Chairperson), Rick Brommer, Karen DePottie, Rick Manshaem, Judy Schad, Karen Smith and John Wolf . They will answer any other questions you may have about being placed in a skill level group at Venture Out.

Q. I still have questions. Who do I contact?

A. Contact your group PPA (Player Placement Ambassador), a member of the PPC (Player Placement Committee) or send an email to: voplayerplacement@gmail.com
